The Sixth Age of Man

My life is a constant stream of cakes, balloons and lollipops - all in the name of performance.

Pictured is me performing at Dr Strangelove's Disco is Winchester. In the audience were two of my old friends from school; Kelli and Vicki, it was great to see them again, especially as they had witnessed my earlier attempts at theatre as the Lion in 'The Wizard of Oz' many, many years ago! I still remember nearly boiling to death in that massive fur suit.

On Sunday 16th, Gavin, Lily and I performed our OBERIU piece 'We Are Not Cakes' at The Finger in the Pie Cabaret at Madame Jojo's. We went a bit wilder with our make up this time! It was a smoother performance that at Cabaret Salon, and we received some great feedback afterwards. It seems as though people either really love the piece, or just don't connect with it at all. For me, it's a welcome change to perform with others, and I've enjoyed the whole process. As all three of us have a pretty intense six months coming up (Lily: working in Borneo, Gavin: Finishing his MA in Physical Theatre, and me embarking on training in Creation and Performance at LISPA) we aren't performing this piece again until July 2013, but we have managed to get it filmed - see below.

When I'm not mucking about with puppets, I like to see as much theatre as I can - I've seen two shows this week. The first was Shunt's 'The Architects'. I've always enjoyed the type of spaces they choose to stage their work, though this piece, although it began well with a disorientating maze, left me rather unsatisfied, as it wasn't nearly as physical as other shows I've seen by them. Later in the week I saw Kneehigh's 'Midnight's Pumpkin'. I defy anyone to see that show and not leave with the biggest grin! It was delightfully silly and very festive. They even got me involved at one point by dressing me as the pumpkin!

My final gig of the year was last night in Tunbridge Wells. I had a bit of a panic beforehand as I'd forgotten to pack my CD's! I got half way there and had to turn back to fetch them. I arrived at the venue in enough time, and was quite happy with my performances of festive Lolly Poppins and The WAG. Miss Jones gave me excellent introductions, and she got the party going with the longest, funniest and most potentially dangerous curtain call I've ever taken part in!

I now have a couple of weeks break before returning in 2013 at Miss Laura Lavelle's show at Jamboree in East London. I'm squeezing in a trip to Amsterdam with a couple of girlfriends before the hardcore clown training kicks in on January 14th. I expect my burlesque will have to take a bit of a back seat, but will a blogging a-plenty on all the shenanigans going on at LISPA. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!

Backstage at White Rabbit
Tempest Rose once introduced me for a 'Shipwrecked' event as 'Queen of Props'. I don't know of another performer who lugs as much stuff around as I do! Recent gigs have made me have a serious re-think about some of the props I use in my acts, and I've decided to ditch the hatstand in my Lolly Poppins act. This should make my commute slightly easier!

I had a stange gig on Friday night, it was for Down the Rabbit Hole, at White Rabbit in Stoke Newington. The actual venue was dark and intimate - I really liked it. The problem was that the stage manger was running late, and the task of putting out props was delegated to the Host. She - of course - was busy being a host, and I found myself being announced when nothing I needed onstage had been set! I entered and put out my set, while remaining in character - not the best start! If I'd been in the promoters shoes I would've done the stage management myself, or changed the running order so my things could be set for the start of the show. Still, no harm done, and every gig is a learning experience.

Cabaret's Special Forces
What was I just saying about the props??!!! Pictured is Tricity Vogue and I after the show for Bang Tidy Burlesque in Leeds on Saturday. This gig had a great backstage atmosphere, I finally got to meet Constance Peach, Glorian Gray and Heidi Bang Tidy, and made new pals out of Titsulina Bumsquash (amazing name) and Crystal Tips. It was great to see Ivy Wilde, Trixie Pash and Tricity again. I managed to watch nearly all of the acts from backstage, and caught the end of Glorian's amazing trampoline act and Constance's very sexy Bellini act. My Xmas themed Lolly Poppins didn't go particularly well again...oh well, there's still next time.

This Friday I'm making a return to The Railway in Winchester, and some old school friends and my old line manager are coming to watch - pressure!!
The Mist: We Are Not Cakes have a performance this Sunday at Madame Jojo's. This will be our last one until next Summer, as one of our trio is going to work in Borneo. We are filming the act and I will put it up here as soon as possible.

Have a look at the Upcoming Appearances page to see where else I'll be popping up next.

It's been a while...I've been attending weddings and parties in Canterbury, Somerset and Cardiff for the last three weekends. Pictured is the table decoration from the Canterbury wedding of Mr and Mrs Jay. I met Tootsie Sugar a couple of years ago when she hired me and Gaaavv Fowler to perform at Burlesque on the Beach in Margate. She still has trouble calling me by my real name!

On November 24th I performed at La Rose Rouge at the Eight Club in Moorgate. The organiser - Mich - had seen me perform my Allo Allo act at Bawdsville, and got in contact. It's always nice to be asked, so I happily accepted! It was a lovely party, and Anna Larkin was there as well, greeting the guests with her accordion. The photo was taken from behind the performance area, so you can see the audience reactions, which is unusual for a performance photo - though quite interesting to see their various expressions, which I can't ever take notice of when onstage.

The following Thursday was very exciting and nerve-wracking, as it was the debut performance of 'We Are Not Cakes', our Oberiu inspired theatre piece, at Volupte. This is Gav, Lily and I in costume before the performance. It went down pretty well, I was worried as it's very abstract and not particularly 'easy'. We had quite a few vocal reactions during the show - nervous giggling, random questions, and we were called 'weirdos'. All absolutely welcomed and expected! We were very happy with the responses, and will be performing the piece again at Madame Jojo's on December 16th. The overall plan is to keep making ten minute chunks, to eventually fashion into a full length theatre piece. I've been madly making costumes and puppets for the past month, so it was great seeing it all come together.

I have plenty of gigs to keep me busy in December, and will be performing my Christmas themed Mary Poppins act several times. Look at the Upcoming Appearances page for more detail.
